On July 26, 2025, Human Rights and Development Services (HURDS) took to the streets of Nkroful with a bold message: “Break the Silence on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).” The street walk was part of HURDS’ ongoing campaign to challenge the culture of silence that has long enabled violence against women, girls, and vulnerable groups to persist in communities.

Why This Campaign Matters

SGBV is not just an individual tragedy; it is a community crisis. In many households and neighborhoods, survivors suffer in silence due to stigma, fear, or lack of support systems. HURDS’ campaign—supported as a local subsidy from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under the Support to Human Rights, Gender Equality and Civil Society (S(HE)) Project in Ghana, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)—sought to change this narrative.

The goal was clear: to empower communities to recognize, confront, and eradicate all forms of gender-based discrimination and violence. By breaking the silence, the campaign aimed to create safer spaces for women and children to live with dignity and security.

A Gender Transformative Approach

The campaign went beyond awareness. It was designed to prompt social reflection on the root causes of inequality, discrimination, and violence. Through a combination of digital advocacy and community-driven activities, HURDS highlighted the impact of gender-specific inequalities and inspired collective responsibility for change.

What Happened on July 26

The Nkroful street walk brought together community members, activists, faith leaders, young people, and stakeholders, all marching in solidarity against SGBV. Participants held placards, shared messages, and engaged with the public in powerful conversations. The walk was more than a protest—it was a visible declaration that silence is no longer an option.

Beyond the Walk

The campaign continues with:

  • Social media activities amplifying survivor voices and raising awareness.
  • Community engagement sessions educating families and leaders on prevention and support.
  • Collaborative partnerships with stakeholders to sustain impact.

Moving Forward

Every voice counts in the fight against SGBV. The Nkroful walk was a strong reminder that communities can come together to demand justice, equity, and dignity for all. HURDS remains committed to advancing this cause and ensuring that survivors are heard, supported, and protected.
